The WhatsApp Business API (also called the WhatsApp Business Platform) is Meta's official way for businesses to send and receive WhatsApp messages through software instead of a phone app. It is what powers bulk campaigns, chatbots, shared team inboxes and order notifications — everything the normal apps can't do at scale.

"API" sounds technical, but you don't need to be a developer. Platforms like WABPO give you a dashboard on top of the API — you click, the API does the work.

What's the difference between WhatsApp, WhatsApp Business, and the API?

The short answer: the apps are for people and very small teams; the API is for businesses that need scale, automation or teamwork.

What do you need to get the WhatsApp Business API?

You need surprisingly little. The whole list:

  • A phone number that is not currently active on the WhatsApp apps (or one you're willing to migrate)
  • A Meta Business account — free, created during signup
  • A business — real businesses pass Meta's checks; you don't need to be a registered company to start
  • A platform to use the API through, like WABPO — Meta doesn't offer a dashboard itself

How much does the WhatsApp Business API cost?

The API itself is free — you pay per conversation, at rates set by Meta that vary by country and message category. Marketing messages cost more than utility messages (like order updates), and replying to customers within the 24-hour service window is free. WABPO adds no platform fee to start, so your only cost is Meta's rates — see the country-by-country rates here.

How long does setup take?

Minutes, not weeks. Meta's embedded signup — the flow WABPO uses — connects your number, creates the Meta business account and issues API access in one guided session. Business verification (for higher limits and the verified name) can take a few days, but you can start messaging before it completes.

Once connected, the practical next step is your first campaign — our guide on sending bulk messages without getting blocked walks through it, and the WhatsApp Business API page covers the platform side in depth.

FAQ

أسئلة شائعة

Is the WhatsApp Business API free?

The API has no license fee — you pay Meta per conversation, with rates that vary by country and message category. Replies within the 24-hour customer service window are free. On WABPO there is no platform fee to start, so Meta's rates are your only messaging cost.

Do I need a developer to use the WhatsApp Business API?

No. Platforms like WABPO provide the complete dashboard — campaigns, templates, chatbot builder, team inbox — on top of the API. Developers can optionally use public APIs for custom integrations, but everything works without writing code.

Can I use my existing WhatsApp number with the API?

Yes, you can migrate a number from the WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app to the API. The chats stored in the app do not transfer, so export anything you need first. Many businesses simply start with a fresh number instead.

Is the WhatsApp Business API the same as WhatsApp Business Platform?

Yes — Meta renamed the WhatsApp Business API to the WhatsApp Business Platform. Most people still say "API". Both names refer to the same official product for business messaging at scale.
