WhatsApp upgrades group chats: better polls, @all mentions and faster group creation
WhatsApp gave group chats a serious upgrade: polls can now close at a set time, hide who voted, and be edited for 15 minutes, and a new @all mention pings every member — with admin-only limits on larger groups.

Polls got three fixes in WhatsApp's official announcement on August 4, 2026: you can set an end time to lock voting when time is up, hide voter names so people answer more honestly, and edit the poll question within 15 minutes if you spot a typo.
@all notifies every member of a group at once — intended for genuinely urgent messages like closures, deadlines or last-minute changes. In groups larger than 32 members it is restricted to admins, and any member can mute @all in notification settings.
Group creation got faster: you can start a new group from people already in an existing one in a single tap, instead of adding members one by one.

These are community features, not customer-messaging features — and the difference matters. Groups are excellent for a staff rota, a class, a society or a supplier crew. They are a poor fit for customers, because every member sees every other member's number, anyone can reply to everyone, and there is no delivery or reply reporting.
Worth knowing before you build a process on them: the WhatsApp Business API does not support groups at all. Anything you run in a group is manual, tied to one phone, and cannot be automated or measured. If a group is currently doing a job your business depends on, that job has no path to scale inside it.
@all is a notification hammer — treat it that way. Meta clearly anticipated abuse, which is why it is admin-only past 32 members and mutable by anyone. Used for a genuine closure it is useful; used for promotions it teaches people to mute the group, and muted is one step from left.
For reaching many customers at once while keeping each conversation private, a broadcast does what a group cannot: each person receives a normal one-to-one chat, nobody sees anyone else, and you see delivery, reads and replies per recipient.
